Does a hangover shot actually work? A skeptic's read
Honest answer: maybe a little, for some people, and nobody has proven it. Here is what the evidence does and doesn't say about DHM, electrolytes, B-vitamins and milk thistle, plus why timing and a printed label matter.
Does a hangover shot actually work? Nobody has proven it does, and nobody has proven it doesn't. The ingredients have some logic behind them and thin human evidence. If you're skeptical, good. Here is what holds up, what doesn't, and how to judge a shot before you spend money on one.
So, does a hangover shot actually work?
Short version: the jury is out, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Cleveland Clinic put it flatly in a piece on hangover products: "the jury is still out" on whether they have the effect they claim. That article was about pills, but the same gap applies to shots. Small studies, mixed results, big promises on the box.
We make a shot, so you can discount what we say accordingly. But we'd rather you walk in skeptical than walk in sold. Ballast is made to help you feel sharp tomorrow. It's not a trick, and it's not a promise.
What the evidence says, ingredient by ingredient
Most shots in the category run on the same four things. We went through them in the label guide. Here is the skeptic's scorecard.
| Ingredient | What's behind it | What's missing |
|---|---|---|
| DHM | The most talked-about one. Early research, and the best-known study was in rodents. | Large human trials. |
| Electrolytes | Alcohol makes you lose fluid, so replacing salts is basic hydration support. | Proof that this changes how you feel the next morning. |
| B-vitamins | Your body uses them when it processes alcohol, so topping up makes sense. | Trials linking a shot's B-vitamins to next-day function. |
| Milk thistle | A long research history, mostly about general liver health. | Evidence aimed at a night out specifically. |
Read that table the way a skeptic would. Two of the four have sensible reasoning and no big human trial. One has early animal work. One has history in a different job. None is a proven fix.
That's the honest state of things. A shot built from these four is a reasonable bet. It's not a sure thing.
Why timing matters
Here is something the category gets right more often than it admits: when you take it changes what it can do.
Most shots, ours included, are built for before or while you drink. Electrolytes and B-vitamins are about having them on board while your body is working through the night. Showing up with them at 11 a.m. the next day is a different thing.
Our rule: take one before the first round. Optional after, if you like.
This is reasoning, not a trial result. We're saying why the timing makes sense, not claiming a study proves it. But if a brand doesn't tell you when to take its shot at all, that's a flag. Timing guidance should be printed on the pack. Ours will be.
Why a printed label matters
If the evidence is thin, the label is the only thing you can check. So check it.
- Is there a Supplement Facts panel? Not a mood board. A panel.
- Does each ingredient have a dose? "DHM extract" with no number tells you nothing.
- Is the serving size clear? One shot, one serving, or two?
- Is timing printed? Before, during, after.
- Is there a 21+ line? Responsible brands say so.
A printed dose doesn't prove a shot works. It does let you compare products and notice when a number looks like a marketing guess. A "proprietary blend" takes that option away.
Where we stand today: Ballast's formula is still being set with our production partner. The direction is DHM, electrolytes, B-vitamins and milk thistle. We aren't printing any doses here, because there's no final formula yet. Doses will be printed once the formula is set, on every pack. We're also not claiming better ingredients than anyone else. We're claiming a label you can read.
What a shot can't do
A shot isn't a license. In the same Cleveland Clinic piece, dietitian Devon Peart warns that treating a hangover product as a "get out of jail free" card can lead people to overdo it with drinking.
We agree. Ballast doesn't make a night out safer, and it doesn't make driving okay. Never drive after drinking. The shot is for the 9 a.m. meeting crowd who already plan to keep it reasonable. It's for adults 21 and over only.
Questions people ask
Do hangover shots work? The evidence is mixed and mostly small. Electrolytes and B-vitamins have sensible reasoning. DHM and milk thistle have early or indirect research. No large trial proves a hangover shot works. Results vary by person, so judge a product by its label and by how you feel.
When should I take a hangover shot? Most are made for before or while you drink, not the morning after. With Ballast, take one before the first round. Timing guidance is printed on the pack. If a brand doesn't print it, ask them.
Does a hangover shot make drinking safer? No. It's not made for that, and we'd never say it is. Drink less if you want to feel better tomorrow, and never drive after drinking. Talk to your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you take medication.
