Why are hangover shots so expensive? Ours is about $10
Other DTC hangover shots run about $2.67 to $6.33 each. Ballast is about $10. Here is what that price is for, what it isn't, and how to test it for yourself.
Why are hangover shots so expensive? Part of it is the category: small bottles, short shelf of ingredients, lots of marketing. Ballast is about $10 a shot, higher than the rest of the field, and that is on purpose. The price pays for a label with every dose printed and a trial pack so you can test the claim. Here is the plain version.
The price gap, said out loud
When we looked at direct-to-consumer hangover shots, the going rate was about $2.67 to $6.33 a shot. Most sat between $4 and $6 once you bought a pack.
Ballast is about $10. That is a real gap. We are not going to pretend it is a rounding error.
We also aren't going to shrink it. The price is set, and we would rather explain it than discount it. If a shot at $4 does the job for you, buy the $4 shot. We mean that. But if you want to know why ours costs more, keep reading.
What we will not do: hand you a fake cost breakdown
A lot of "why it costs this much" posts show a pie chart of ingredients, packaging and shipping. We won't, because we can't do it honestly yet. Ballast's formula is still being finalised with our production partner. Until it is locked, any cost number we gave you would be made up.
So here is what we can say. The formula direction is DHM, electrolytes, B-vitamins and milk thistle. No NAC. The exact doses get set when the first production batch formula is confirmed. Then they go on the label.
We would rather tell you that than dress it up.
What the $10 is for
We treat the price as a signal. Three things sit behind it.
| What you get | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A printed label with every dose | You can read what is in the bottle and compare it to any other shot. |
| A trial pack | You can test the claim on a real night out before committing to anything bigger. |
| No proprietary blend | No "secret stack" hiding the numbers. Doses are listed, not guessed at. |
Every dose is on the label. Go ahead, read it.
A proprietary blend lets a brand list ingredients without saying how much of each is in there. That is how a cheap shot and a serious shot can look identical on a website. We skip it. If you want the full read on what a decent label shows, we wrote a plain-talk label guide.
What the price does not prove
A higher price does not mean a shot works better. We won't say it does.
Honest state of the evidence: nobody has proven that hangover shots work, and nobody has proven they don't. The ingredients have sensible reasoning behind them and thin human data. We went through that ingredient by ingredient in does a hangover shot actually work.
Ballast is made to support how you feel the next day. It is not a promise. It is not a cure. It does not make drinking safer, and it never makes driving okay. Never drive after drinking.
So what does $10 buy if not a guaranteed result? Transparency. A label you can check, a brand that says "not final yet" when that is true, and a way to try it without a big bet.
How to decide if $10 is worth it to you
Skip the debate. Run a test.
- Read the label when it is final. Look for a milligram dose next to every ingredient. If any are missing, walk away. That goes for ours too.
- Check the timing. Ballast is a 2 oz shot you take before the first round. Timing guidance is printed on the pack.
- Try four, not twelve. Use one on a night out you would normally have. Use another on a different night. Four gives you more than a one-off hunch.
- Pair it with the basics. Eat, drink water, pace your rounds, get to bed. Our three-step night-out ritual covers it. A shot sits on top of that. It does not replace it.
- Do the maths on your own mornings. If you show up sharper for the 9 a.m. meeting, the price is easy. If you don't notice a difference, you spent one trial pack finding out, not a month of subscription.
Not sure it works? Start with four.
Questions people ask
Why are hangover shots so expensive? Small single-serve bottles, a crowded category and heavy marketing push prices up. Ballast is about $10 a shot, above the roughly $2.67 to $6.33 we found for other DTC shots. We charge that on purpose: it pays for a printed label with every dose and no proprietary blend.
Do hangover shots really work? Nobody has proven it either way. Electrolytes and B-vitamins have sensible reasoning, while DHM and milk thistle have early or indirect research. Results vary by person. Judge a shot by its label and by how you feel after a trial, and check with your doctor first if you take medication.
Is a more expensive hangover shot better? Not automatically. Price alone tells you nothing about results. A readable label with listed doses tells you more. Compare doses, timing guidance and what the brand admits it does not know.
Try four before you decide
Ballast is for adults 21 and over, US only. The Trial 4-Pack is open to reserve now. It is a pre-order: no payment today, shots ship once the first production batch is confirmed, and you can cancel for a full refund any time before it ships. The formula is not final yet, and the page says so.
Reserve the $27 Trial 4-Pack, listed at about $10 a shot, on the first batch page. Read the terms there first. They are short.
